Prize Money Allocation
For each Mega Millions draw, 50% of the sales for the draw is allowed as prize money. The First Prize is allocated 63% of this amount. The remaining prize monies are then used to pay out the additional eight prize levels.
How is the Jackpot Prize Determined and Paid?
For the starting jackpot we guarantee a prize amount that includes annuity interest (the money it will earn over the prize payment period). Subsequent jackpot amounts are based upon expected sales plus the First Prize money carried over from previous draw until the jackpot is won. As the jackpot grows, so does Mega Millions fever!
There are two Mega Millions Jackpot Prize Payment Options. You can receive your prize in 26 annual payments or you can receive the prize in a lump sum cash payment. See the How to Play Mega Millions for more details. Jackpot winners who select the Lump Sum Cash Value option will receive the estimated present cash value of the advertised amount. The amount will be less than the advertised jackpot.
